South-East Manitoba Broadband Initiative (SEMBI)

Work has been completed on this exciting project that has brought high speed internet via wireless technology to the municipalities of Rhineland, Montcalm, Franklin, Stuartburn, Piney, as well as the communities of Emerson, Gretna, Plum Coulee and the Buffalo Point First Nation.

The project started in early 2003 with a request from Borderland School Division for assistance to develop a high-speed communications network for the division schools, transportation resources, and administration staff. The project soon grew to include the areas listed above which at that point did not have access to high speed Internet.

WiBand Communications was chosen as the contractor for the projector and began work on the network in the fall of 2004 after a number of delays. The project is now complete and serving these areas with a reliable and high quality wireless connectivity. There are areas that remain without service and Triple R is working to being this same quality service to those areas in the coming months.

In total the project received approximately $875,000 from the Federal government with an additional contribution from local partners of $250,000 and well over $1,500,000 contributed by WiBand Communications. It is the intent of the project to continue exploring development opportunities brought about by this access to wireless internet service.
